South Korean tech giant Samsung outperformed all the competitors and sold more foldable smartphones than any other in 2022. A Canalys report said that it accounted for 80 percent of foldable lineups’ global shipment dominating the fast-growing segment.

Samsung went ahead of other brands such as Motorola, Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo combined in 2022. The news could be highly encouraging to the company who wish to take the lead in this segment. Foldable phone market is expected to double in 2023. Interestingly, foldables shows a curios trajectory at the time when global eagerness to buy phones took a hit the same year.

As per the report, 14.2 million foldable phones were shipped in 2022. Canalys reports that the market could grow on to ship 30 million units in 2023.

Samsung, which leads the foldable phone market with superlative numbers, was responsible for 12 million of the units shipped in 2022. Chinese brand Huawei trailed just behind in the ranking with 2 million units’ shipment. OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor continued in this arena of smartphones however, they should be more eager after only launching first or second-generation gadgets despite none of them touching the million mark. To illustrate, popular brand Motorola registered only 40,000 units in 2022.

Foldables the next thing!

Credit to the makers, foldables come with signature design. Their growing appeal comes from their ergonomics and the different experiences they bring. Foldable phones as the name implies can be folded in half which makes them easy to fit in pockets. They are distinct from smartphones and look more futuristic what mainstream and common smartphone designs fail to offer.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Design foldable

Samsung currently holds the most sway in the foldable phone market but other major brands especially Chinese are also trying to disrupt the market. So, 2023 will be an interesting year to see for the foldables.

Samsung has targeted 15 million units shipment combined for its Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. The two gadgets come with high-end specs such as Snapdragon 8+ Gen chipset, and cameras. The company plans to launch its next-generation foldables- Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5 in 2023.
