Nepal’s internet market is bracing for a notable shift as major internet service providers (ISPs) withdraw low-speed packages and push customers toward high-speed plans. However, government-backed Nepal Telecom (NTC) appears to be taking a different approach. As private ISPs begin posting revised plans, it’s said that it won’t make changes to its existing prices.

Sharing a promotional post, the company highlighted that it won’t make changes to its NT Fiber internet prices and packages. This is a major stance at a time when private ISPs have officially pulled 2-digit plans.

From October 5, companies like WorldLink, Vianet, and Subisu have stopped offering or renewing several low-speed packages. It’s in response to the SC’s decision on ISPs for TSC and other fees. On the contrary, NTC has highlighted that its prices have not increased and that it continues to offer lower-speed FTTH packages.

NTC says internet prices have not increased

NTC’s latest promotional message carries the statement “Our prices have not increased”, directly contrasting its approach with the recent changes in the ISP market.

NTC continues to offer its 50 Mbps NT Fiber Internet + Telephone package at Rs. 815 per month. The same package costs Rs. 2,350 for three months and Rs. 8,499 for a year.

It also offers 75 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 150 Mbps and 200 Mbps packages, with the 200 Mbps package priced at Rs. 1,600 per month.

Nepal Telecom benefit internet packages

The packages also come with NT-to-NT voice calling provisions, while yearly subscribers receive daily mobile data benefits. In fact, NTC’s internet package is a Triple-Play service which comes with internet, NT TV, and a telephone line through a single fiber cable.

An opportunity for Nepal Telecom

The strategic approach could bring a huge favor for Nepal Telecom amid the private ISPs’ bold decision to phase out low-speed internet plans.

Major ISPs are increasingly focusing on packages of 200 Mbps and above, meaning customers looking for cheaper, moderate-speed connections now have fewer choices. The recent decision by ISPs to discontinue lower-speed packages has also raised concerns among users who do not require very high-speed internet.

Nepal Telecom has also started providing IPTV service on Smart TV using Virtual Set top box. It allows NT Fiber users to use NT TV service without having a Set Top Box.

In this situation, NTC’s 50 Mbps package could become an attractive alternative, particularly for small families, students, and users with basic internet requirements. For people in this particular group, a 3-digit speed package is an unnecessary luxury.

Also, the inclusion of telephone service in NTC’s packages, including the 50 Mbps subscription, can become an attractive choice for users who want a landline phone in their residence. If you count the telephone service in the package, then NTC’s service may look more affordable too.

The move could therefore be more than just a promotional campaign. If NTC maintains its existing prices and continues offering lower-speed options while private ISPs move toward higher-priced packages, it could attract customers looking for affordable broadband.
