Finance Minister Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat speaks at Nepal Telecom Workers' Union's 32nd anniversary

Nepal Telecom Workers’ Union (NTCWU) has marked its 32nd anniversary at an event in Kathmandu on July 24. At the event, the union leaders and others demanded better facilities and services for employees pointing to the discrepancies in benefits between the company and other institutions.

The event was inaugurated by Finance Minister Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat who pointed to the need of the telco’s management and the union being on the same page to elevate its capabilities.

The minister talked at length about Ntc’s employees, the company’s challenges, and competitiveness in the market.

“The state must be sensitive to the fair demands and concerns of the workers,” Mahat said. He stressed a respectful attitude to the employees and added “The mindset that these are just workers and we should not give facilities to them, should be changed”. Technology has transitioned from landline telephone to wireless. “At the current state, Nepal Telecom has a challenge to stay up to date with the evolving technologies,” the minister added.

The company has a presence in service sectors and Mahat emphasized going digital in health and education to reduce expenditures. He opined that not integrating technology will make the company incompetent.

Finance Minister Mahat said that Nepal Telecom no more boasts a monopoly in the market. He said that the company is battling with the private operators which he admits are aggressive. “Private companies’ decision-making is also faster. Government-backed companies are slightly burdened by regulations.”

The minister called for a collective approach from all sides. He expressed that the government needs to address management-level issues at the company. He added, “For capacity-building, Nepal Telecom can take initiatives itself. Everyone must contribute in their capacity.

At the program, he also shared the plan to bring internet service to all the schools in the country. Earlier in Janakpur, the Communication minister said the same that all schools will get a broadband connection in FY 2080/81.

NTCWU Chairman Suresh Prasad Rauniyar, coordinator of the event Lal Bahadur Rana, Ntc BoD Shankar Lamichane and others demanded better facilities for retirement, life insurance, etc. just like at banks, Radio Nepal, and other sectors.
