Major US telco Verizon and telco gear maker Ericsson have tested the first-ever pre-standard 6G field call in the 7 GHz frequency range. The development is crucial as the trial went from inside the lab to a commercial network site.
The call was successfully conducted at a Verizon commercial site in Concord, California, in which Ericsson provided a 6G proof-of-concept kit. The two companies conducted the test in upper mid-band frequencies outdoors and then measured how the signals penetrated physical structures to beam signals.
The trial used a base station installed inside a site shelter and user equipment housed in a 12-by-8-foot mobile enclosure. The mobile unit was placed away from the base station and featured customized backup power systems. The test also had different glass and wall materials to simulate indoor environments.
This arrangement enabled engineers to assess how a pre-standard 6G system operating on a 400MHz carrier handles different signal conditions. This included the ability to analyze clear line-of-sight connections, obstructed paths, vegetation, physical barriers, and signal loss when penetrating buildings.
Verizon CTO and SVP of Technology Development Yago Tenorio highlighted Ericsson’s contribution to the operator’s 6G Innovation Forum and its efforts to turn 6G research into practical network deployments. He said the outdoor trial would deliver important technical insights to help shape global 6G standards and guide the development and rollout of future networks.
Importance of Verizon and Ericsson 6G test in 7 GHz
The first field call of 6G in 7 GHz by Verizon and Ericsson marks the latest development on the road to the 6G network launch. The next-gen tech is touted to launch around 2030 or even before that. Therefore, the two major stakeholders’ call to move 7 GHz out of the lab to the commercial network site is a significant development. It allows the telcos, states, and gear vendors to find the potential, shortcomings, and other premises of 6G while also helping them to develop global standards.
6G is the successor to the current network, 5G. The replacement technology is expected to bring even faster data speeds of about 1000 Gbps, up from 20 Gbps in 5G. There are also heavy talks about minimal latency and consistency. One thing is sure. 5G was once a major topic in the industry, but technology never stops innovating. The world is already serious and moving towards 6G.
