Nepal’s telecommunications and ICT expert Ananda Raj Khanal has been appointed as the Head of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)’s South Asia Regional Office and Innovation Centre in New Delhi.
Khanal was appointed to his new role by the ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau on September 22, 2026. He officially assumed the role on October 1, 2026.

According to the ITU’s official information, Khanal will lead both the South Asia Regional Office and the Innovation Centre, taking on a key regional role in telecommunications, ICT development and digital transformation.
Khanal possesses over three decades of experience across telecommunications, information and communication technology (ICT), digital transformation, public policy, regulation, cybersecurity, digital infrastructure and innovation.

Previous roles of ITU expert Ananda Raj Khanal
Previously, Ananda Raj Khanal spent more than 15 years in senior leadership positions at the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), Nepal’s telco regulator. During his tenure at the regulator, he was involved in policy and regulatory work covering telecommunications and ICT, broadband expansion, cybersecurity, digital services, and ICT accessibility for persons with disabilities.
Born in Nepal in 1970, Khanal joined NTA in April 2006. Before that, he served at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Kathmandu University in Nepal.
Khanal has also contributed to several initiatives related to Nepal’s digital and cybersecurity ecosystem. His involvement includes work on the National Cyber Security Policy, cybersecurity awareness assessment, the Wireless Broadband Master Plan and legal frameworks related to cybercrime.
Khanal’s appointment places a Nepali telecommunications expert in a significant regional position within the ITU, where he will be responsible for supporting ICT and digital development initiatives across South Asia.
