Nepal Telecom connects Karmarong Rural Municipality with 4G

Nepal Telecom 4G in Karmarong rural municipality

State-backed telecom company Nepal Telecom (NTC) has begun 4G service in Mugum Karmarong Rural Municipality – 04 of Mugu district.  The company started the advanced mobile data service on Poush 25, 2081 after bringing a base station into operation.

This marks the beginning of 4G service in the remote and rural region in the hilly district. Before this, no fast and reliable cellular technology was available in Karmarong. So, now the area benefits from NT’s carrier aggregated 4G service. People can also enjoy NT VoLTE on their mobile phone which allows High-Definition voice on cellular calls without losing data service. This also helps local businesses with shifting transactions to electronic means.

Karmarong is a highly remote region in Mugu district at an elevation of 3,000 meters. It connects to the border with China. In 2075, the company started a GSM mobile service installing VSAT technology. But now, the area gets world-class telecommunication service with 4G thanks to Ntc.

Nepal Telecom launches 4G in Karmarong, Mugu for the first time

The 4G service of Nepal Telecom brings high-speed technology to various areas in the Karmarong Rural Municipality. The coverage spans across all the wards which includes areas such as Dolfu, Pulu, Kimri, Kartike, Dara, Riusa, etc.

Additionally, the trekking routes in the same areas in Karmarong also benefit from the 4G network for the first time. It’s stunning that various areas in Nepal still remain without the standard telco service such as 4G. But that’s due to the geographical complexities which makes it difficult to transmit equipment and maintain the services.

This is why, credit must go to service providers like Ntc who are still making efforts to expand telecommunications and promote digital inclusion.

Despite being a commercial enterprise, NT is also a government entity. So, it has stressed establishing services and upgrading them. The company provides GSM cellular service as well as FTTH fiber internet service. So far, Ntc has extended 4G in 98% of local levels while achieving all-Nepal coverage for FTTH fiber internet.

Ntc is also in the plan for a 5G shift with 4G gears so, expanding 4G remains important for its future as well. The company will reportedly resume its 5G trial somewhere in FY 2081/82.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
