Nepal’s leading SMS service provider Sparrow SMS has announced the launch of a Keyword Block System. The move is made to comply with the 48-hour silence period mandated by the Election Commission.
The company has said that it has enforced strict controls in its SMS system for the time being.
According to Manoj Thapa, CEO of Sparrow SMS, “As a responsible technology service provider in Nepal, we fully support the guidelines issued by the Election Commission. Safeguarding the democratic process is our duty, and preventing potential misuse of digital channels during the silence period is our top priority.”

Sparrow SMS disables 2082 election messages during the silence period
Sparrow SMS says that its Keyword Block System (KBS) implementation identifies and blocks messages related to the election of 2082. That means during the 48-hour period, sending messages relating to political parties, candidates, or election campaigns won’t be possible. The KBS system effectively identifies and blocks these messages. During this period, the authorities expect the highest form of adherence to the election code of conduct from everyone.
The company is ensuring that no political promotional SMS is sent via its platform during the silence period.
The company maintains that SMS services such as bulk messages, OTPs, banking alerts, and commercial marketing messages will remain operational.
The election starts at 07:00 AM and concludes at 05:00 PM on Falgun 21, 2082. In the meantime, you can see how to check your voter ID list online to ensure your name is on the list.
The company’s decision aligns with the government’s condition that no promotional activities can run during the silence period.
“Sparrow SMS remains committed to delivering its services in full compliance with legal regulations, regulatory directives, and social responsibility standards,” the company has said.
