Nepal Telecom (NTC) has issued a clarification that its Rs 4,999 annual package offering 30 Mbps FTTH internet is not an unauthorized or new offer, following reports circulating in some media outlets. Releasing a press statement, the government-backed company said that the NT fiber internet package is completely legitimate and falls within the existing rules and regulations of NTA.
The context on why NTC issued statement on 30 Mbps yearly package
Recently, NTC is providing a yearly internet package of 30 Mbps for Rs 4,999. The package drew awe and attention from all sides. Even PM Balen Shah promoted the yearly offering, which furthered its popularity among more people. However, several media outlets wrote that the package was unauthorized by NTA and the company had paid Rs 50,000 in fines.
The company said the reports were based on a press release issued by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) on 2083/06/30, regarding internet service providers operating contrary to their license conditions. According to Nepal Telecom, the reports incorrectly linked that notice to its 30 Mbps FTTH package.
In its presser, the company states that it is communicating with the NTA to obtain approval for the internet packages it operates. It further adds that it had informed the authority about the package in question when it was introduced.
The Rs 4,999 package is not new
NT says that its Rs 4,999 package is part of an offer it already communicated to NTA as a student-focused offer. Therefore, the company has urged customers and other stakeholders not to be misled by reports suggesting that the package was operating without the necessary approval.
Nepal Telecom further reiterated that it operates within the policies and legal framework approved by the Government of Nepal and remains committed to complying with applicable laws and regulations.
The clarification comes amid discussions over the NTA’s action against internet service providers found to have violated their license conditions. Recently, NTA fined 14 ISPs over sales of unauthorized packages, which is why the 30 Mbps plan also caught attention.
Nepal Telecom has stressed that the regulator’s notice should not be misinterpreted as evidence of non-compliance by the state-owned telecom operator.
