Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel has directed Nepal Telecom (NTC) to improve its service quality further and make it more effective. The minister’s directive came following his inspection of the company on Sunday, November 11, 2025.
During the event, which also saw NTC announce student offers for fiber internet, the minister called on the state-run telecom company to establish itself as a well-governed entity.
NTC, aka NT, is a national telecom company with the majority of the government shares. It provides GSM mobile, FTTH fiber internet under NT Fiber branding, and other services. To attract more public participation at the company, the government has made preparations to float 30% NT shares to the public.
On quality advisory, Minister Jagdish Kharel said, “The government’s first priority is elections and good governance, so now we must link telecom services with good governance. I have said this by linking it with good governance; we must make efforts to maintain good governance and control corruption. This government has to do something, even if it is in a short period of time. There is pressure, challenge, and energy for this government to do something.”
He also directed the company to terminate the contracts of companies that have delayed the projects or failed to provide quality work commitments.

Minister Jagdish Kharel wants Nepal Telecom to improve service quality
During his address at the program, he stressed good governance at the company. “It is my expectation that the good news of good governance needs to reach the public. It is necessary to establish Telecom as a good institution in Nepal.” During the same program, the company also launched a special student offer for fiber internet, “NT Fiber Vidhyarthi Offer“.
The minister pointed out receiving complaints over the company’s telephone and internet services not being reliable, and he urged the ministry (MoCIT) to focus on improving quality. He also told the ministry to focus on extending the reach of modern communication services in remote regions of the country.
Under Kharel’s lead as the minister, Ntc and other ISPs have collaborated to provide free WiFi in multiple public places in Kathmandu and beyond. He is also actively leading initiatives to expand services to more remote areas in the country.
NT is the largest telecom company in Nepal with over 3.31 lakh fiber and over 1.42 crore 4G users in Nepal. The company is currently seeking NTA clarifications to launch 5G in Nepal.
