Subisu restoring services after massive fire

Massive Fire occurred in Subisu’s central server and Earth station at Baluwatar in the afternoon of August 7, 2019. The fire destroyed the server system, cables putting a halt to their services. This has made a huge loss to the ISP/Cable operator. Find update below.

Subisu is one of the leading Internet Service provider/Cable TV operator with its Central office and server at Baluwatar. On Wednesday afternoon (around 12:45 PM), a huge fire broke out from a barrel of petrol in the building. The fire videos and pictures were all over on Facebook. After the fire,  internet and TV services interrupted at some places with the damage of their equipment.

A huge number of Firefighters and Security personnel were deployed to extinguish the fire. As known, the operator has suffered a huge loss in the range of billion rupees. We believe they must have had insurance to claim for such huge loss.

Restoring the service

At first, Subisu apologized to its customers for the outage of their services in some places due to the massive fire. They also sought people’s understanding of the situation. After putting out the fire, Subisu keeps putting its effort to restore the network. Although they have been successful in restoring the service in some part, it will take more time to restore in other areas.

Subisu’s Media Manager Rejina Acharya says, “We are working on to resume services in all places as soon as possible. All of our services will restore by tomorrow morning”.  It seems they do not know the exact figure of no of subscribers affected. As the incident took place in Baluwatar, Subisu Subscribers around Baluwatar and vicinity areas felt no service from afternoon.

Update: Subisu on Thursday evening says they have restored service for 90% subscribers. They could do the restoration so quick due to the activation of its alternative data center at Thapathali. As known, the Thapathali data center is also not recovered fully after the massive Earthquake in 2072 B.S.  Subisu also likes to assure the restoration of all the services within 2 more days.

Subisu provides digital TV/Internet services through either cable or Fiber (FTTH).

With such huge fire damaging Subisu equipment in a matter of minutes, the ISPs/telcos need to be very cautious to avoid such a situation. They need to have a full-proof mechanism at first to not have such incidents in such sensitive locations. Secondly, they also need to have a backup plan in case such situation occur. Lessons will be learned if the real story behind the fire eruption is made public.
