Reliance JioPC

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio has officially launched the JioPC service, which provides users with a virtual desktop experience on their TVs. The company says that the cloud-based service enables students and professionals to engage in their tasks with a smooth and seamless experience. The service has been touted as revolutionary and next-gen in the digital landscape. In this post, we guide you through what JioPC is, how to use it, and more. Let’s dive in.

What is a JioPC?

JioPC is a virtual desktop service that gives users features and services that mimic a traditional computer. It allows users to connect their mouse and keyboard as on a computer and work on word-processing software, watch movies, browse the web, etc. The service is cloud-based, so it only requires a mouse and keyboard on the user’s end to enjoy the service.

In essence, JioPC turns a TV into a desktop computer, albeit with a subscription.

How to set up a JioPC on your TV?

Here are the steps to start using JioPC on your TV.

  • Ensure that your Jio AirFiber STB or JioFiber STB is turned on and connected to the internet
  • Open the JioPC app on the home screen
  • Tap on Get Started
  • Proceed through the Welcome screen and connect your Keyboard and Mouse
  • User details such as name and mobile number will be auto-fetched
  • Set a password
  • Enter the OTP for verification
  • Log in using the password you just set

In India, the Jio STB comes free with the company’s broadband service. But it can also be bought for INR 5,499 as well.

What can be done on this virtual PC?

Jio website says that the JioPC service allows users to browse the web, run productivity apps, help attend online classes, etc. It’s basically like any regular things most of us do on a computer. But at the same time, let it be known that it doesn’t support webcam, printer, etc., at least for now. Also, while it doesn’t support Microsoft Office offline, users can resort to Office 365 on the web or use the default LibreOffice app, which comes pre-installed.

Internet is required all the time

JioPC is cloud-based, so it requires an active internet connection to operate. If the internet disconnects, users also get disconnected from JioPC. However, users’ works are stored safely on the cloud and starts right from where they left off during the internet outage or disruptions.

As JioPC is an Indian service, it’s not available in Nepal. However, one can surely fancy a cloud-based service that lets you turn your TV set into a computer. For a country like Nepal where still many households are without a computer, such a virtual PC experience could help make users especially young students familiar with the computers.
