Mobile World Congress(MWC) was the place for many smartphones manufacturers this year. Most of the top smartphone company launched their flagship phone on the event. VIVO, the Chinese brand which is making a huge leap in the smartphone had an eye-catching smartphone showcased. The Vivo APEX which just shown as a concept during the event has finally got unveiled. APEX features the all-screen design of mobile phone with a Synaptics in-display fingerprint reader.

Vivo APEX features a 91% screen-to-body ratio, on-screen fingerprint scanner and a self-elevating camera. The full details of the smartphone haven’t been announced yet. The company says that the mass production of the phone is set to begin by the middle of the year. At a local event in China, the company hinted that the APEX will come with a Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor.

Some of the Chinese technology blogs suggests that the phone features a 5.99-inch OLED display with Chip on Flex (COF) technology. COF modules are ultra thin and light and have low power consumption which is ideal for handheld instruments etc. where space is at a premium.Since the phone has very less bezel, there lacks a space for many sensors on the top of the phone. Vivo APEX has embedded ambient and proximity sensors on the bottom of the phone, under the display.

APEX comes with a hidden 8-megapixel front camera which elevates form the camera body when it is needed. They had embedded a Hi-Fi speaker in the phone which has three amplifiers. The smartphone has a proprietary Screen Sound Casting technology that generates vibrations through the display to produce sound.

The highlighting part of the phone, Half-Screen Fingerprint Scanning Technology that works as an on-screen fingerprint scanner is hidden under the half part of the display. Vivo had already launched Vivo X20 Plus UD that had fingerprint unlocking functionality limited to one spot on the screen. This phone has an entire place on the bottom half of the screen for the fingerprint scanning.

World’s First Half-Screen In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology

Following the success of In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology at CES 2018, Vivo has installed the world’s first Half-Screen In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology in the APEX™. Transforming the entire bottom half of the OLED screen, users can touch anywhere on the bottom half of the screen to perform fingerprint recognition, enabling a more flexible and intuitive experience while meeting industry standards for security.

Half-Screen In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology also enables new usage scenarios, such as the new dual-fingerprint scanning feature in APEX™ for even greater strengthened security.

Availability and Verdict

Since the phone is not available in the market at the moment, they are set to start for the mass production from the June-July of the year. The phone will be available soon after the mass production in the international market. We can’t be sure about the date of availability in Nepalese market.

The phone is an example which proves that the phone does not need a separate space for the fingerprint scanning sensor. APEX might be a huge success in the smartphone market with the unique technology and their bezel less display. Hats off to the manufacturer for this phone.
