Nepal Telecom (NTC) has brought into operation a 2G base station in Chandanbari, which lies on the trekking route to Gosainkunda of Rasuwa. The start of the cell tower establishes vital telecom services for the locals as well as tourists and it comes jusr ahead of Janaipurnima fair at the popular religious site.

The operation of the 2G Base station in Chandanbari is strategically important as it leads the way to the historically and religiously significant Gosaikunda. NT says that it started 2G tower operation to facilitate telecommunications for pilgrims and trekkers who traverse the popular trekking route.

The NT 2G tower has been installed in Chandanbari, which lies on the route from Dhunche to Gosaikunda. The launch of legacy network further hints at the relevance and need of older generation network for communication. It means that 2G network is here to stay still for a few years and so are 2G users.

The infrastructure enables reliable voice and SMS services for users. It also allows for basic data usage.

Gosainkunda lake does have reliable 2G service but the coverage around the trekking route was inconsistent. The new 2G tower should now ensure much better coverage and reliable service.

The 2G tower of Nepal Telecom in Chandanbari (on the way to Gosainkunda) enables connectivity for all the tourists and devotees. It also covers areas from Dhunche to Deurali, Lauiribinayak, and Gosainkunda, which lies at an elevation of 4,200 meters.

Gosainkunda is one of the most popular and religiously significant places in Nepal. But due to its remote geography, telecom services are not as ubiquitous as it’s in urban settlements. But telcos are making efforts to expand services in these strategically key areas.

And speaking of Gosaikunda, a grand fair is organized on Janaipurnima every year. So, the NT 2G tower will certainly help people in such times with voice and SMS service.

Nepal Telecom has been aggressively expanding its telecom services in underserved areas, complying with the government’s policies and programs. It’s establishing services even in areas with slim economic potentials as its responsibility to the people and the state.

It has also shared plans to further expand 4G in high mountains and hills to ensure high-quality connectivity for people. A blanket coverage will ensure digital inclusion and the right steps towards achieving digital Nepal goals.

Likewise, the launch of the reliable 2G service in Chandabari helps locals, local economy, and travellers with connectivity as they seek blessings and adventure on their way to Gosainkunda.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
