Summary✨

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs launched the disaster hotline number 1234 across Nepal for efficient emergency services.
  • Hotline 1234 replaces the previous toll-free number 1149 and decentralizes disaster communication.
  • Calls from major cities go to the National Emergency Operations Center, while calls from other districts reach local centers.
  • The hotline helps citizens report disaster-related issues and suggests improvements to their local emergency services.
  • This initiative aims to enhance coordination and service delivery during disasters like floods and landslides.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has launched the disaster hotline number 1234 in all districts across Nepal. The initiative is aimed at making disaster-related information, complaints, rescue, and coordination services more efficient and effective.

The ministry issued a press release regarding the hotline number that will help during floods and landslides. The notice states that the new hotline 1234 has come into implementation, replacing the toll-free disaster number 1149. Prior to the hotline number, the government ran the toll-free number from the center.

Here, the government has made the hotline number more decentralized to make emergency services more efficient.

New Hotline Number 1234 for disaster rescue operations

The Home Ministry says that calls to 1234 from Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur will reach the National Emergency Operation Center, Singha Durbar. At the same time, calls people make from the other 74 districts will automatically route to the District Emergency Operation Center of the same district, the ministry has stated.

Other 74 districtsDistrict Emergency Operation Center (DEOC) of the respective districtCalls are automatically routed to the emergency center in the caller’s own district

As a result, people will be able to directly contact the emergency center of their own district. It’s especially helpful during the time of monsoon when floods and landslides strike large parts of the country. The citizens can contact the Hotline Number to convey information relating to the disaster, share their problems, and offer suggestions to the emergency center in their own district.

The home ministry expects the hotline number operation to make rescue, coordination, and service delivery faster, easier, and more effective.

The meeting of the Council of Ministers on Chaitra 13, 2082, had adopted a policy to make the civil service result-oriented, accountable, and effective by implementing results-based governance as per the governance reform agenda.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that in accordance with the same policy, a system has been implemented to operate the Emergency Operations Centers in all 77 districts 24 hours a day. The Ministry has urged all citizens to follow the official information and notices issued by the Government of Nepal during disasters and to contact the disaster hotline 1234 if necessary.

Here’s the official notice from the Home Ministry:
