The Election Commission of Nepal now allows Nepalese to register voter ID via their National ID cards or numbers. The new arrangement has been made to encourage more public participation in the upcoming election on Falgun 21, 2082. The system has been tested and gone live today (Thursday, Kartik 27, 2082), and the portal may take time to open due to huge traffic right now. Anyway, it will work smoothly after a few hours.
You can register for a voter ID card online in Nepal, too. However, in the existing system, you would need to go to the nearby election office to get the biometrics done. The new system removes the need for physical presence. Now, you will only need to enter your National ID card number in the pre-enrollment for registration.
The new arrangement has been possible thanks to the initiation of the current Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, the Commission, and the National Identity Card and Registration Department. It addresses some of the remaining inconveniences of the previous system regarding voter ID registration.

In the pre-existing online system, you would complete your pre-enrollment online and go to your nearest election office for further processing. In particular, it’s for the biometrics, which involves photo and fingerprint records mostly. Now, with the National ID cards coming into the system, pre-enrollment has been refined. You can register your voter ID completely online.

Conclusion
The facility from the government to register voter ID with the National ID card is worthy of appreciation. This removes the need to travel to the election office for biometrics. Because while making the NID card, the concerned citizens have already done their biometrics. It’s also good to know the government is taking election matters seriously and integrating digital infrastructures to facilitate the necessary proceedings. By bringing interoperability of NID into the election registration system, the government is doing a good service to the citizens. Also read: Traffic Police Accept Driving License on The Nagarik App
The only quibble here is that not all the citizens have their National IDs yet, but the number of people without them has gone thinner these days. Anyway, for them, the online system is still there, and the only extra effort they require is to visit the nearby election office. With NID, the system has become just more convenient.
Nepali citizens can register their voter ID details until Kartik 30 to participate in voting come Falgun 21, 2082.
