Summary✨

  • Nepal Telecom (NTC) launched mobile service inside the newly opened Nagdhunga Tunnel for seamless communication.
  • The tunnel, inaugurated on July 27, allows emergency vehicles and has an RFID toll system for vehicles entering.
  • NTC provides 2G and 4G services for uninterrupted calls and data, enhancing user experience even in the tunnel.
  • Originally, NTC planned to use leaky cable technology, but they switched to legacy towers for network coverage.
  • This tunnel marks a significant advancement in Nepal’s transportation infrastructure, promoting better connectivity from Kathmandu to Dhading.

Nepal Telecom (NTC) announces the availability of mobile network inside the newly inaugurated Nagdhunga to Sisnekhola Tunnel (aka Nagdhunga Tunnel). The 2G and 4G mobile network was made available to ensure seamless call and data service throughout Nepal’s first road tunnel.

The Nagdhunga Tunnel was inaugurated on Monday, July 27th amidst a program in the presence of Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal, Japanese Ambassador Maeda Toru and Tanaka Akihiko, president of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The tunnel is already open from today (Shrawan 11, 2083) for emergency vehicles. Four-wheelers and more will be allowed to enter towards Dhading with a payment of toll charges, which are managed through an N-tag (RFID device) loaded with required charges. It took around 6 years for the construction of the project, built with the assistance of the Government of Japan through JICA.

With the deployment of the mobile network inside the tunnel, Ntc mobile customers can make uninterrupted calls and use 4G data while traveling through the tunnel. The tunnel is a little curved road spanning over 2.68 Km.

Nepal Telecom in its social media post says, “Mobile network has already been activated inside the tunnel to provide reliable communication throughout the journey for passenger convenience and emergency communication”.

✅ Nepal Telecom’s Namaste recurring plan

Earlier plan was to use leaky cable

Nepal Telecom had earlier planned to use leaky cable to radiate the mobile signal inside the tunnel. As it is the common method for deploying the network inside a tunnel, the network could be provided uniformly inside. But the tender was canceled later, and Nepal Telecom used an alternative network deployment approach by using legacy towers for mobile coverage.

Nagdhunga to Sisnekhola Tunnel is Nepal’s first modern road tunnel, which has been constructed to reduce travel time and improve transport connectivity from Kathmandu and Dhading. It will be an alternative road for vehicles that were earlier traveling through Nagdhunga towards Dhading. It is a major milestone in Nepal’s transportation infrastructure and will set the pace for the tunnel era in Nepal.

With the extension of mobile network into the tunnel, Nepal Telecom says it is committed to providing a better user experience across different environments. The deployment ensures Ntc users inside the tunnel can access call, use the internet, and navigate easily.

If you happen to pass through the tunnel using an Ntc mobile, please let us know about the signal and the network quality.
