Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) arrested the Nepal Telecom (NT) server hacker on Wednesday. Diwakar Deuja of Dhankuta was arrested after NT filed a complaint of illegal access to the Nepal Telecom server.
When Nepal Telecom experienced unauthorized access in their mobile app server system, NT sought the help of Nepal police on Ashad 12, 2077. A 28 years old man from Dhankuta who previously worked as a computer operator in the Urban Development and Building Office, Dhankuta got arrested along with two laptops and two mobiles of his possession.
How was the Nepal Telecom server hacked?
According to CIB, Deuja used untraceable internet technology to illegally access the company’s mobile app server system several times. He misused such access to use the data packs and even sold them to take financial advantage. It hampered the company’s revenue and affected the company’s image as well.
Having a technical background, Deuja used his skills to hack the server but couldn’t escape the CIB of Nepal police. He has violated the regulation Electronic Transactions Act 2063 BS of cybersecurity so, he may be punished accordingly.

The status of data security in Nepal
In this digital era, data security has been the most debated topic as technology hasn’t found the right solution to it. No matter how strong the firewall is, a hacker finds a way to penetrate it without authorized access.
Similarly, cybersecurity in Nepal is a hot debate recently as we got to hear some news such as Viber hack, Vianet data breach, Foodmandu hack, and so on. As our systems are going online with more digital transactions, the threat of data security is also on the rise.
The illegal access of a government-affiliated telecommunication company is even scarier. The potential threat of hacking will decrease the trust of the people towards the digital platform and may go back to traditional transactions.

Nepal Telecom’s mobile app server system was illegally accessed, and its data packs were misused. The culprit was found using untraceable internet technology to hack into the server. Nepal’s digital platform needs to focus on Cybersecurity if digitalization in Nepal is to boost. Reinforcing the technicality of the IT infrastructure with advanced multiple layered security firewalls, strict laws, regular inspection of loopholes are some fundamental improvements that Nepal can do to enhance the cybersecurity.
