Nepal Telecom (NTC) has requested its users to use SIM cards registered in their own names to stay safe digitally. The company states that phone numbers have become essential for daily uses from banking to many other digital services and urged users to stay protected by keeping their data safe.

Phone numbers have been traditionally used for voice calls, SMS, and internet browsing. But nowadays, SIM card numbers are also used for national ID cards, the Nagarik App, banking services, trading of shares, money exchange, and for various social media platforms.

In addition, people also use SIM cards for sharing personal data, documents, savings, and essential services and for many services on a daily basis. Mobile numbers have become extremely sensitive in today’s digital times.

If people use phone numbers registered in their own names, it is possible to be safe using all the digital services. Learn here, how to register Ntc SIM cards in your own name.

Earlier, Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) also requested people to only use SIM cards that are in their own name. The authority urged people to their own phone numbers for using Nagarik App as it makes their identification more convenient. Now, the government-backed operator has also asked subscribers to use their own mobile phone numbers.

Using phone numbers for bank accounts is highly sensitive

These days phone numbers are used for nearly all bank accounts. Bank customers use their SIM cards for mobile banking and other banking services. Unfortunately, if they lose their phone number, this can lead them to trouble. Hackers can violate banks’ security and also breach personal data. Remember that Ntc can freeze a customer’s SIM number if it stays inactive for over six months.

Besides, people can spread false spread fake and false news on social media. However, there are ways to minimize risks. Users can maximize their digital security by using their own SIM cards and also by using two-factor authentication. It involves the application of passwords, and biometrics to maximize user safety.

Not using SIM cards registered in your own name won’t keep customers safe digitally

However, if customers won’t use SIM cards that are in their own name, they can give away information stored on SIM cards. It is also possible that one may inadvertently share vital details, banking, and other personal data.

Ntc warns that such scenarios can lead to customers losing their cash, and compromised safety from social media misuse. There is also the possibility of legal entanglements. This is why the state-backed telco has requested people to use SIM cards that are in their own name. The company says that if people have lost their numbers, they can visit service centers and get new SIM cards.
