Satellite phone users in Nepal

Did you know that there are satellite phone users in Nepal? Since almost the entire telecom user base is on cellular services, it’s hard to even realize, but the fact is that there are some who use satellite services to make phone calls. People who need to contact without the availability of mobile towers are able to benefit from this service. In this post, we explore the current status of satellite phone users in Nepal and who provides such a service.

Satellite phone service providers

Constellation Pvt. Ltd. Is providing satellite phone service in Nepal. It is based in United Arab Emirates (UAE) and was established on February 4, 2002. So, it’s been in active operation for over a decade.

According to Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), it’s not the sole satellite mobile service provider, though. Its latest report also shows another company, i4 Technologies Pvt. Ltd., which offers satellite calling. Both these service providers provide voice telephony service via satellite.

Number of satellite phone users in Nepal

According to the NTA report, there are currently 1,069 satellite phone service users in Nepal. Out of these, Constellation has 1,059 users and i4 has 10.

Sanatan Gajurel, manager of Constellation, says that many organizations in Nepal are using satellite phones. At the individual level, mountain climbers, embassies, security agencies, United Nations program groups, and remote areas where communication is not available have used satellite phones. Gajurel admits that satellite phone service is expensive and less attractive for regular users.

He shared that a satellite phone call costs $1.25 (Rs 170) per minute in Nepal.

The company provides its satellite mobile service via a Thuraya Nova Plus postpaid SIM card.

The activation cost of the SIM is currently Rs 10,000 while the monthly rental is set at over Rs 7,000. Security deposit for the service is $183, which is about Rs 25,000.

Another interesting fact is that the service is free on incoming calls. However, due to its pricey nature, it’s only used for specific groups that can afford it. Let’s assume that it has been used for activities that might involve rescue operations or use in high terrains where mobile coverage is not available.

We all know that Elon Musk’s Starlink wants to provide satellite service in Nepal. The difference is that Constellation uses high-earth orbit satellites for its services. Therefore, it also contributes to its high price factor.

Who and where is satellite phone service ideal?

Due to its expensive nature, satellite phone service is more suited for businesses, organizations, and people in remote regions. Also, it comes in handy for the tourism industry for climbers, guides, telemedicine, and rescue teams. It’s a reliable service in areas where traditional mobile service is not available.

The major drawback with satellite mobile service is its price. But the service is naturally less attractive for people in the cities and rural areas where cellular and fiber services are available.

Will Starlink (If it launches its service in nepal) make satellite communication cheaper and more inclusive? Do share your opinion in the comment section below.
