Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, better known as TSMC, has unveiled plans for its 1.4 nm process technology. The leading chipmaker said that its new silicon will power future products from Apple, Nvidia, AMD, etc.

In chipmaking parlance, nm refers to nanometers. The lower the nm number, the better, as that means more transistors fit on a chipset, which means faster performance. The 1.4 nm process will make processors that will be more powerful than those in use right now.

Currently, 3nm chipsets such as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400+ are in use on flagship phones, while Apple’s A18 Pro chipset is also built on TSMC’s 3nm process.

In June 2024, Samsung, which makes its own chipsets- Exynos, has also announced its own innovations for 1.4 nm technology.

TSMC’s 1.4 nm technology production

TSMC has announced that its cutting-edge 1.4nm A14 technology will enter production in 2028. It’s likely that the technology will go through more improvements and refinements over the 2nm fabrication process.

According to the chipmaker, the 1.4 nm process will improve power handling by 30 percent, and performance will be boosted by 15 percent. It’s said that the technology is 60 percent more efficient compared to the current-generation 3 nm technology.

When will 2 nm process get underway?

TSMC’s 2 nm chipsets could start production in late 2025. So the timeline seems probable. Other firms such as Apple are also working on it with

1.4 nm technology is at least 3 years away from us. But when it comes to implementation, smartphones and other products will be even more powerful and energy efficient.
