Communication Minister Mr. Prithvi Subba Gurung has directed Nepal Telecom (NTC) to immediately launch the 5G network for the public. Speaking at a program to discuss the annual budget and programs for FY 2082/83, Minister Gurung urged NTA and NTC to start working on the commercial 5G launch. The minister’s words could inspire a 5G launch in the immediate future, as many remain waiting for the fifth-generation carrier service on their compatible devices. He also stressed on the need for 4G expansion to every nook & corner including national highways.
In the meeting, Mr. Gurung also talked of the aggressive expansion of the 4G network. Earlier, State-backed company NTC planned to use 4G architecture to launch 5G network in Nepal. In 5G vocabulary, it’s also known as non-standalone 5G. But it is not clear which architecture is NT going to follow for its 5G network.
The minister expressed his bemusement that even after a year of directing NTA and NTC for the commercial 5G launch, it hasn’t happened. He also remarked that NTC expanding across the districts, theoretically, is not enough. He said that the company must ensure 4G access in every household and national highways.
As of now, NT Fiber has reached all the 77 districts while NTC’s 4G network is available in over 98% of local levels.
Communication Minister Gurung wants 5G launch in 2082 and quality services
During the meeting, Minister Gurung stressed the 5G launch as early as possible in 2082. He also pointed to the need for reliable services for the public. He added that issues with internet and telephone service discourage the digital Nepal framework. Likewise, he shared that network disruptions create a sense of no service among the customers and pose a challenge in digital good governance.

He also drew the attention of NTA and NTC to inconsistent network coverage and quality on highways. He urged the two to be more proactive in expanding services where people need them urgently. “NTC should reach where the people need it most,” the minister remarked, adding, “5G should be launched soon (in 2082).”
The minister highlighted that both internet and telephone services are important to promote tourism as well.
5G launching soon, finally
In the meantime, NTC Chairman Bhupendra Bhandari informed that the work of “operating the 5G network has almost reached the final stage”. He said that the bidding process will be initiated soon, and the network will be expanded.
Similarly, NTC Acting Managing Director Sabina Maskey Pradhan also said that the 4G expansion is ongoing, and preparations are underway to launch 5G.
Ntc begin its 5G trial on Magh 22, 2079 BS, however, it couldn’t continue for long and is on a halt at the moment. But, it’s clear that the government is keen on it. Also, NTA and NTC are also working on its commercial launch soon. So, as a user, we could all be hopeful to use 5G on our phone soon.
