Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone 16 series on September 09 at an event called Glowtime. The US phone maker pitched the power of Apple Intelligence for its phones, while also bringing some new features such as a camera control button, exceptional battery life, etc. The series consists of four phones- iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Here, we discuss specifications, new features, and the expected price of the two base models iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus in Nepal.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus Overview
The new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus aka base models come with slight improvements from the previous lineups of iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. The new iterations are also capable of Artificial Intelligence thanks to the new A18 chipset. The battery has improved so has the performance, and camera experience with a new camera action button. Design and display
The iPhone 16 vanilla model is the smallest among its peers with 147.6 x 71.6 x 7.8 mm and weighs 170 grams, lighter than iPhone 15 by 1 gram. But the Plus model is big. The phone’s dimensions are 160.9 x 77.8 x 7.8 mm which gives it a large body and a weight of 199 grams, 2 grams lighter from iPhone 15 Plus. Both these phones have glass front and back while the frames are of aluminum. Titanium is exclusive to the Pro models.
The phone carries a dual camera setup on the back that is vertically fixed. These phones come in various shades- Black, White, Pink, Teal, and Ultramarine. These phones just like the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max get IP68 water and dust protection keeping it safe from occasional exposure to water and dust particles.
One of the tangible differences is found in the display sizes. The iPhone 16 comes in a 6.1-inch display while the iPhone 16 Plus rocks a 6.7-inch display making it almost on par with the Pro Max variant in terms of size. Likewise, both the standard variants feature Super Retina XDR display (OLED). Both these phones come with just a 60 Hz refresh rate but match the Pro models in brightness with 2000 nits of peak brightness. Both phones’ glass is protected by a Ceramic Shield.
Performance
Both iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus variants feature the new 3nm A18 chipset which includes 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU. The chipset also boasts a 16-core Neural Engine. Although these base models miss out on the Pro chip, it supports Apple Intelligence which will solidify the iPhone experience starting iOS 18.1 update in October. For now, the phone will boot to iOS 18. The previous iPhone 15 model featured an A16 chipset which deprives them capability of Apple Intelligence features.
Both these siblings come with 8 GB of RAM and offer 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB of internal storage. There’s no 1 TB storage available in these models.

Camera
Unlike the three-camera setup on the Pro models, these two base iterations feature an advanced dual-camera setup. 48 MP Wide “Fusion” camera and another 12 MP Ultrawide unit. The phones also feature a front camera of 12 MP. Both the back and selfie cameras are capable of 4K recording at 60 fps.
Both phones’ cameras offer .5x, 1x, and 2x optical zoom options, while the new camera control button lets you seamlessly interact with the camera. By that, I mean, you can open the camera app, click photos, and gather information on objects you put in the frame.
Battery and connectivity
Apple doesn’t explicitly mention the capacity of its batteries; however, there are sources mentioning that the base model comes with a 3,561mAh battery while the Plus variant has a 4,006mAh cell. The American phone maker is absolutely upbeat regarding the battery efficiency of its new-generation phones. Apple claims that the iPhone 16 offers up to 22 hours of video playback and its senior variant iPhone 16 Plus provides 27 hours of it. Likewise, they offer 80 hours and 100 hours of audio playback, respectively which are all sizeable improvements over iPhone 15 base variants.
The phones charge at a decently fast pace with MagSafe. Apple has offered 25W wireless MagSafe charging, while also adding 15W wireless Qi2 and 4.5W reverse wired charging capabilities. In sum, charging these two iPhone 16 phones and also the Pro ones are highly user-friendly and versatile.
For connectivity, the phones support 5G, WiFi 7, Type-C, NFC, etc. The phones also allow Emergency SOS via satellite service which lets users send messages in areas deprived of mobile networks. Apple iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus price in Nepal
In Nepal, the iPhone 16 price could start at Rs 137,999 with its international price set at $799 for the 8/128 GB variant. The iPhone 16 Plus sets you down $899 internationally, so it could translate to around Rs 156,999 here in Nepal for the 8/128 GB model. The phones could be launched in Nepal in October.

Apple has likewise, started pre-orders for the iPhone 16 series in 58 countries including the US, Canada, France, Germany, the UK, India, Japan, etc. Starting September 27, the premium phones will be up for pre-orders in 21 more countries.
Our initial verdict
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have become lighter and more agile. Thanks to the new A18 chipset, phones will also be eligible for a haul of Artificial Intelligence features to roll out soon. Likewise, the new camera control button enhances the experience with the camera while the Action Button allows to access various features such as translation, voice memos, activate Ring or Silent mode, etc. But Apple could have given high-capacity cameras in the standard variant iPhones as Google did in its Pixel 9 series. Additionally, you might also have reservations over the familiarity with its design. The phone also competes with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.
