Khalti QR lets Indian tourists make payments in Nepal, How?

Khalti, Nepal’s prominent digital payment service provider has announced that it has struck up a partnership with Fonepay Payment Service Ltd. and NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) of India to launch cross-border QR transactions through its Khalti app. That means Indian tourists on their visit to Nepal can conveniently make digital payments in Nepal by scanning Khalti QR codes on their mobile wallets such as PhonePe, Google Pay, and BHIM UPI (India’s popular digital wallets).

The announcement follows the recently begun Nepal-India cross-border digital payment initiative between the two countries. This revolutionary cooperation between the two neighboring countries opens up various economic prospects for all. First, it allows Indian tourists in India to pay online hassle-free. Secondly, it also unlocks new avenues for Nepali merchants for their businesses. Khalti says that this service will greatly benefit small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as they become one part of the vast tourism market.

Khalti has already integrated Fonepay into its payment network and now, it has landed another landmark partnership which further emboldens its value in the digital economy promotion for Nepal. Recently, the Indian government allowed Nepalese to buy Indian SIM cards in India. Now, this inter-country transaction will further prop up the prospects for both.

How can Indians pay in Nepal using PhonePe, Google Pay, and BHIM apps with Khalti?

Indian tourists can easily pay in Nepal by scanning QR codes on Indian digital wallets such as BHIM UPI, Google Pay and PhonePe. Here are the steps on how Indians can pay in Nepal using Indian digital wallets:

  • Launch Indian digital wallet apps such as BHIM UPI or PhonePe
  • Scan Fonepay QR to pay at Khalti merchants.

Khalti launches cross-border payment for Indian tourists to pay in Nepal

Khalti says that over 20,000 Nepali merchants can now accept QR payments from Indian tourists. This not only generates a new way for revenue streams but also lets them contribute to the overall economic growth.

Additionally, Khalti erases the hassle of currency exchange or having to carry physical cash for Indian tourists. Simply put, they can scan QR codes and pay digitally within a few seconds. That means even the need to carry traditional payment cards is no longer a necessity while making purchases in Nepal. With this digital payment facility, they will feel an elevated travel experience.

Regarding this milestone collaboration, Khalti’s CEO, Mr. Binay Khadka said,

Khalti says that a cross-border payment facility will also open up for Nepali users in India

For now, the Khalti app has enabled Indians to make online payments using PhonePe, Google Pay, and BHIM UPI. However, in a few days, Nepali citizens will also be able to reap the benefits in Indian markets. As Khalti says, Nepali Khalti wallet app users can also scan QR codes and pay electronically in India. If you are a digital wallet user, then this service by Khalti will be exceptionally helpful if you have to go to India.

The leading payment service provider says that it has completed all the groundwork and prepared the necessary infrastructure to get the service underway. It adds that users and merchants alike will have a seamless and hassle-free cross-border payment experience with its efforts.
