Ntc requests to use mobile data for payments than public wifi for security

Nepal Telecom (NTC) has requested customers to use mobile data instead of public WiFi hotspot for digital payments. The company released a notice making the request over security reasons.

Ntc said that using data is more secure and reliable for performing digital payments. The company’s request comes as number of frauds, scams, hacking, grow by day. In its statement, Ntc says that using public WiFi or WiFi hotspots could be risky for digital transactions. So, users should prefer using their own mobile data to pay for products and services.

Ntc notice for free mobile data instead of public wifi

Ntc said in the statement that its customers can buy data packs by dialing *1415# on their phone or by using the Nepal Telecom App.

However, some users have reacted that using Ntc data packs are expensive. You can use Ntc data packs for your internet connectivity on mobile. Pay As You Go (PAYG) scheme doesn’t seem reasonable in today’s time of data packs. So, you can buy data packs according to your needs and budget for data.

Why Ntc tells customers to use data for digital payments?

Ntc’s requests to use data for digital payment is for security concerns. Public WiFi networks are not personal, and they have many users that we don’t know. Some of the users’ motif could be to hack other’s personal details when they connect to a public WiFi. And these days, public WiFi is not too hard to find.

Many of us use smartphone to pay these days. We use digital wallets and mobile banking apps for digital payments because it’s super easy. We open a digital wallet or a banking app, scan a QR, and pay. But there’s a possibility of a security risk. Especially on public WiFi networks, there could be users targeting devices that connect to the network.

Unfortunately, we can’t confirm easily if the public WiFi we use is breached. But hackers can access our mobile banking details, digital wallet profiles, etc. They can use such information to scam or steal the money. And it’s not just for payment, but also for using social media or other activities, public WiFi is generally seen as less secure. Therefore, you need to be very careful while connecting to available WiFi networks at restaurants, cafes, or other public places. Here are our best tips on how you can safely use free WiFi hotspots

Generally, using mobile data is safer and reliable as it’s directly provided by our telecom companies. The company uses advanced technologies to protect user data and privacy. So, Ntc requested that users give priority to using mobile data to make mobile payment.
