Vianet increases FUP limit in its unlimited internet plan by up to 60%

Vianet, one of the leading ISPs in Nepal has increased its FUP quota on its unlimited internet plans. The internet service provider decides to boost the Fair usage limit by up to 60%.

As the lockdown keeps on extending here in Nepal, the demand and significance of the internet shoot up significantly. People are now relying on the internet to pass their time, do their professional work from home, study, etc. So, internet usage has skyrocketed in this period. This is one of the challenges for Nepali ISPs in this crisis period.

The increase in the FUP limit is not only for the lockdown period but the change is permanent. This is a matter of rejoicing to all the heavy internet users out there.

FUP limit

With this high demand, people find the internet to slow down after the usage of certain internet volume quotas: the FUP limit. The ISPs implement this FUP (Fair usage policy) to prevent some heavy users to affect all other normal users. After the usage crosses the assigned FUP limit, the ISPs restrict or throttle the internet speed in their unlimited plans.

The ISPs all around the world practice this FUP to maintain the fair usage of the network for all the customers as they are paying the same amount for the service. This has been also done to manage the internet bandwidth while maintaining the quality for its users.

How is FUP implemented?

The ISPs keep on checking the internet data volume for each customer in a monthly billing cycle. Regarding Vianet, they calculate the upload and download data of users, starting from the 1st day of every English month.

If the usage data exceeds the threshold (assigned in three different levels), the ISP then throttles the user’s speed as per the data volume usage. So, crossing the FUP usage at level 1 will throttle the internet speed to 60%. Similarly, raising usage above level 2 and level 3 throttles the speed to 30% and 10% respectively.

As they start new billing for the customer in a month, they reset the data usage counter on the 1st day of every English month.

New FUP quota

Vianet implements the new FUP quota for all of its users in different speed range. Let’s take, for instance, the new FUP limit for 25 Mbps unlimited internet starts after usage crosses 800GB data. There will be no degradation in speed until 800 GB volume usage.

If the data volume remains within 800 to 900 GB, then the speed throttles to 15 Mbps out of 25 Mbps subscribed. This throttling speed is at level 1 volume usage. At the level 2 FUP at 900 to 1000 GB and level 3 FUP for greater than 1000 GB usage, the speed downgrades to 8 Mbps and 4 Mbps respectively.

The new FUP limit at level 1 in the 25 Mbps unlimited internet is 800 GB which is an increment from earlier 500 GB by 60%.

Vianet, one of the popular internet service providers (ISP) in Nepal says they have no FUP limit in Small office and home (SOHO) plans.

Ultraboost

Vianet also lets its customer buy additional data volume if you exceed the FUP quota. They call the feature as “Ultraboost” which provides 25 GB data of 100 Mbps speed at the price of Rs 198 (inclusive of taxes). This is beneficial for all the professionals who rely on the home internet for all of their works, generally take large volumes and require high speed.

The new FUP limit has been implemented in Vianet’s network from Tuesday (April 28) afternoon itself. We suppose this has been brought to provide more data volume to the users who are residing at home and demanding more data volume. So, the number of complaints about the slow internet will also cut down greatly with the upgrade in the internet experience.
