Telecom operator Nepal Telecom (NTC) has migrated its network to fiber in Inaruwa, Sunsari. The company has replaced its dated copper-based exchange Network with a reliable and high-speed fiber (FTTH) system.

The honorable Minister of the Ministry of Information, Communications, and Technology, Gyanendra Bahadur Karki inaugurated the fiber network on an occasion.

At the event, Mr. Karki said the current society is the age of information and technology. He added that the upgrade to the fiber exchange network by Ntc is going to eliminate usual network issues in Inaruwa – 6, 8, and 10. Similarly, the customers in Bhokraha Narsingh Rural Municipality – 1 will also benefit from the next-generation fiber network in the area.

Speaking on the same occasion, the Chief of the District Coordination Committee, Rajan Mehata urged to make the fiber (FTTH) exchange network more effective. He shared that Ntc provides voice, internet, and TV service all through a single fiber cable.

Triple Play, the vehicle of Ntc’s insurgency

Ntc has been gradually upgrading its traditional copper-based network to fiber. Since 2075 BS, the operator is providing FTTH broadband service by default. What makes its service unique is the combination of services. Ntc’s fiber internet service brings high-speed internet, telephone, and digital TV, all via the same fiber cable. The company calls it Triple Play service.

The company launched the unique service when internet consumers were subscribing to private ISPs’ high-speed packages. But with Triple Play into the scene, Ntc has not only warded off contest from private ISPs, but it has also seen telephone service maintaining a respectable base.

Strange as it may sound, Ntc has quietly succeeded in the bludgeoning speed war in Nepal. Despite private ISPs launching super fast packages, the government-backed operator continues to stay unfazed and grow its base not flinching a bit.

Ntc’s fixed-line service has a massively growing base with 7.61 lakh as per the latest data by NTA. Meanwhile, it still has over 5 lakh subscribers on ADSL service. At the same time, over 1 thousand users subscribe to its lease line service.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
