Nepal Telecom 4G in Korala Border

Nepal Telecom (NTC) established the 4G network in the Korala border (Korala Naka) area on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. The historic move brings reliable and modern telecommunication services to the remote regions benefiting locals, tourists, and businesses.

To launch its telecom services, NTC installed a cell tower in the Korala Border region which stands at an elevation of 4700 meters above sea level. The area serves as a vehicle border between Nepal and Tibet, China. The company has been very aggressive in extending its mobile network in remote regions including up North around the border region. Korala border has become the state-backed company’s latest frontier. Previously, the company had established only 3G services in the adjacent regions such as Nyamdo, Chungjung, and Korala.

According to the NT office chief of Baglung, Santosh Baral, the company set up a tower to provide 2G and 4G services and run on solar energy. That means users will get reliable voice services with 2G while 4G will offer high-speed mobile broadband. The company also provides HD voice with VoLTE and eSIM, so having an NT service means a suite of services including 4G data, and VoLTE calls for smartphone users.

Although there is talk of leaving 3G or which network, 2G or 3G will shut down first, NT continues to include 2G service as it remains a solid network for voice service.

NTC 4G arrives in the Korala border and excites everyone

The advent of 4G in the Korala border has delighted the locals and government workers. Chairman of Lomanthang Rural Municipality Tasinarbu Gurung said that the communication facility benefits local residents, traders, security personnel, customs personnel, and anyone who reaches the Korala border crossing.

Although thinly populated, the Korala border is a key region for trade, tourism, and customs. A national transmission line has already expanded in the Korala border area. Chief District Officer Janakraj Pant said that the office of immigration, customs, and security agencies is set up in the building constructed last July with the investment of the Gandaki provincial government.

The start of advanced telecommunication service is likely to elevate the lives of everyone in the region. NT 4G has coverage at 98% local levels and seeks to reach a blanket penetration soon. Check out the latest status of broadband penetration in Nepal.

NT is aiming to reach all-Nepal 4G coverage in the current fiscal year FY 2081/82 and resume 5G trial in major cities.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
