Ncell Safer Internet Together

Nepal’s leading telco, Ncell, has jointly announced the Safer Internet Together (NIT) initiative with NAASA Securities. This nationwide project aims to reach schools across Nepal and raise awareness and impart knowledge on cybersecurity, data privacy, and other aspects of digital safety. Ncell Foundation says that it will benefit 50,000 beneficiaries, including students, educators, and community members.

The initiative was announced during an SIT session at Shree Rastriya Secondary School in Pokhara on Tuesday. During the event, Ncell CEO Michael Foley addressed the students, sharing insights on digital safety and the responsible use of AI in the current digital age.

Foley highlights the importance of safe internet projects

The SIT initiative aligns with the Foundation’s broader commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive digital ecosystem in Nepal. During the announcement of the project, Ncell CEO Foley highlighted the importance of personal data in the internet age and stressed the need to assess the risks. He said:

“I am also a dad, and personal data is important for me as a parent, too. Thus, the internet plays a pivotal role in our daily lives. With technology becoming an integral part of our daily lives, it is, hence, very important to understand the risks and be prepared as well. Through this SIT programme, we aim to empower students and young people with essential knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world safely, responsibly, and confidently. I am truly hopeful that this initiative will equip the next generation with the guidance and tools required to make the most of a connected future, while staying protected along the way.”

The joint national project stands Ncell as a responsible digital enabler seeking to promote safe internet use and empower the connected young populace in the country.

“As digital platforms increasingly shape how young people learn, communicate, and make decisions, ensuring their safety online has become a shared responsibility. At NAASA Securities, we strongly believe that digital literacy and cyber awareness are as important as financial literacy in today’s world. Through our collaboration with Ncell Foundation on the Safer Internet Together initiative, we aim to equip students with practical knowledge to use technology responsibly, protect their digital footprint, and build confidence in navigating the digital ecosystem safely. This initiative reflects our long-term commitment to responsible digital empowerment and community development across Nepal,” said Madan Paudyal, Managing Director of NAASA Securities.

Ncell says that it will conduct awareness classes in both government/community and private schools in phases. At first, it will operate sessions in Bagmati, Gandaki, and Madhesh provinces, focusing on students from grades 3 to 12. The telco and NAASA Securities have also developed a physical handbook on internet safety. Students will receive these books during the program. After the first phase, sessions will take place in the remaining provinces in the next fiscal year.

This year (2026), Safer Internet Day is being observed with the theme, ‘Smart tech, safe choices: exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.’

So far, Ncell and NAASA Securities have conducted SIT sessions in nine schools, with Asterisk Technology as the implementing partner. The sessions so far have reached and benefited 7,000 students.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
