China has started a pre-6G test in Nanjing, China, on April 21, 2026. The move gives the country a milestone step in the race to lead the next-generation cellular technology.
The pilot project is based on the existing 5G framework but incorporates 6G innovations. The test features high bandwidth capacity, extensive coverage, extra-minimal latency, and built-in AI.
According to CCTV News, the test’s capacity can reach 10 times the current 5G networks.

China works towards 6G with a pre-test
China is conducting its 6G pre-test in low-altitude inspection, holographic communications, etc. It’s a key development for the Asian giant in its ambition to lead the next-gen technology race. In gist, the test catapults the country’s 6G goals from mere testing to full system-level capability verification.
6G is the successor to the current 5G network, and while 5G-Advanced is already here with further improvements, 6G is seen as a harbinger of next-gen potentials with more effective applications.
It’s expected that the pre-test plays an important role in the upcoming 6G standardization and its commercial applications.
Also, various states and telco gear vendors expect that 6G could launch as soon as 2028, such as Nokia. In that regard, China’s 6G pre-test marks a key development in that path for its commercial deployment.
