19 areas in Kathmandu get free WiFi, find places and speed

19 public areas in Kathmandu are set to get free WiFi internet service. The initiative is led by the current Communication Minister Jagdish Kharel, who promised to launch free WiFi in two months in Kathmandu while assuming office on Ashoj 06.

The government has made free WiFi hotspots available in public areas that will benefit large crowds with free connectivity. The project is taking place in a phased manner. The government, in coordination with NTA, will provide free WiFi service at various hospitals, airports, and other important public areas.

The communication ministry (MoCIT) says that it has also started WiFi quality improvement in various areas. So far, the ministry has installed or improved free WiFi connections in 8 areas in Kathmandu. But also, keep in mind that you should use free public WiFi safely.

These areas in Kathmandu get free WiFi service:  

  • New Buspark
  • Bhaktapur Hospital
  • Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital
  • Kirtipur Hospital
  • Tribhuvan International Airport
  • Transport Management Office in Thulo Bharyang
  • Transport Management Office in Ekantakuna, Lalitpur
  • Transport Management Office at Radheradhe, Bhaktapur

The service is provided via 6 access points at Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital and 5 at Kirtipur Hospital. The government is cooperating with Nepal Telecom (NTC), WorldLink, and Vianet to provide free WiFi services in these areas. Ntc has already started free WiFi at TIA and will do so at 34 airports across the country.

WiFi speed improved in these areas

At the same time, NTA has improved bandwidth capacity from 10 Mbps to 150 Mbps at these places:

  • Paropakar Maternity & Women’s Hospital
  • T.U. Teaching Hospital, Maharajgun
  • Teku Hospital
  • Kanti Children’s Hospital
  • Civil Service Hospital
  • National Trauma Center
  • Patan Hosptial
  • Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center
  • Pashupati Temple area

As part of the Communication Minister Jagdish Kharel’s first decision, the WiFi service is being extended to many public spots in Kathmandu and beyond. According to the ministry, it’s working on establishing free WiFi connections in 10 cities as well.
