Nepal Telecom (NTC) is expanding its mobile network coverage with 4G capacity in the Tikauli jungle area situated in Bharatpur, Chitwan. The expansion work is part of the company’s efforts to launch telecom services in the jungle areas on the highways and in underserved settlements.

The company has been installing the necessary equipment to launch the services. It’s using sector expansion from the existing BTS to beam mobile signals on the highways. It’s the regular way of work at the national telco for the expansion of services on the highways that have either poor or no cellular coverage at all.

NT is using special antennas, placing them strategically in different places to extend coverage.

Nepal Telecom starts 4G in Tikauli jungle area

The effort from Nepal Telecom to start 4G in the Tikauli jungle area is part of a national approach. The initiative facilitates the locals, tourists, and people travelling on vehicles with network coverage. The company is bringing coverage to areas on the highway that have no 2G or 4G network. If you travel frequently, you will find that your mobile signal drops at various locations. That’s because there’s no carrier beaming radio signals to those specific locations due to vegetations or blockage or tower pretty far away.

NTC says that it doesn’t have exact details on how many kilometers of the highways don’t have access to cellular coverage. However, it’s going to continue service expansion in those uncovered areas.

A Cell tower can provide coverage from 1 kilometer to 10 kilometers, depending on the technology, frequency, and geography. The average coverage capacity of such a device is 5 kilometers on average.

Being a national telco, Nepal Telecom gives priority to expanding reliable communication services in areas that have no prior services. So far, NTC 4G coverage has reached 99% of local levels and plans to reach blanket coverage within 2083. Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) and NTC can also collaborate to use RTDF to expand the mobile network across Nepal, especially for those uncovered rural areas.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
