Summary✨

  • Ncell urges traditional SIM users to upgrade to a USIM or eSIM to access 4G services.
  • 86% of Ncell subscribers own 4G-compatible phones, but many still use traditional SIMs that don’t support 4G.
  • 0.6% of users own 3G phones.
  • Ncell plans to shut down its 3G network, pushing users to adopt 4G technology for better quality services.
  • With a USIM, users can enjoy high-speed data, HD voice through VoLTE, and other modern services.

Ncell has requested old SIM users to upgrade to USIM to enjoy 4G services. Releasing a notice, the private telco has urged users on traditional 2G SIMs to upgrade their SIMs to an eSIM or USIM so that they become eligible for high-quality 4G data and voice.

In the notice, Ncell points out that most of the users are using 4G-compatible phones. However, they are deprived of 4G services as some of them still use a traditional SIM that doesn’t support 4G.

The private telco quotes that Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has urged users to inform their carrier of their current SIM. Therefore, it has requested users to upgrade to an Ncell eSIM or USIM, which unlocks 4G network access on their phone.

The company has said that with 4G, users can enjoy high-quality voice and fast data rates.

Recently, Ncell shared that 86% of its subscribers have 4G-compatible phones. And 5.50 lakh users haven’t yet bought a USIM or eSIM. The company shares that about 0.6% of its customers use phones that only support a 3G network. Not having a new-generation USIM/eSIM bars their access to the fruits of the 4G network.

Ncell requests users to use a USIM for 4G

Ncell says that users should have either a USIM or an eSIM for 4G for better quality services. But besides that, it is also shutting down the 3G network.

So far, Ncell has started shutting down 3G in various districts and will be doing so in several districts across Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Lumbini, and Karnali provinces.

Now, it’s promoting users to use 4G, which is the most up-to-date network available in its network and the country.

A traditional SIM only provides a 2G/3G network, while a USIM gives users access to 4G services. With it, users get to use high-speed data, Ncell VoLTE for HD voice, and other modern services.

Here’s the official notice from Ncell.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
