Summary✨

  • The Bhotekoshi flood caused extensive damage, impacting one mobile tower of Ncell and over 60 km of optical fiber lines, with financial losses exceeding Rs. 90 million.
  • Ncell provided free voice, data, and SMS services to over 300,000 users in affected areas, initially for three days, later extending it by seven more days.
  • Usage of free services has surpassed Rs. 12 million as connectivity improved with restored mobile towers.
  • Ncell repaired 24 out of 27 damaged towers and reactivated services for over 25,000 customers previously restricted due to balance issues.
  • In coordination with the Nepal government and NTA, Ncell is promoting public awareness to prevent scams and inappropriate content on social media.

The devastating Bhotekoshi flood on Bhadra 10 completely damaged one mobile tower of Ncell in Timure, Rasuwa, while also damaging over 60 km of optical fiber lines.

According to the company, preliminary assessments indicate that the damage has caused financial losses of more than Rs. 90 million (Rs 9 crore).

On the brighter side, over 3 lakh Ncell users benefitted with free voice and data after the Bhotekoshi floods. The company has provided free resources for users of badly affected regions. The free voice, Ncell data, and SMS services are available for users in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan.

The company initially provided the free services for three days, but later extended the service period by another seven days to help with ongoing rescue efforts and keep people connected in times of crisis.

Ncell says that the value of free voice, data and SMS services used by customers exceeded Rs. 12 million (Rs 1.2 crore) as of Monday. The telco said that the use of free services has been increasing as the number of mobile towers that remain out of operation has declined.

Ncell posts damages after Bhotekoshi floods

Ncell says that the Bhotekoshi floods and landslides damaged fiber links, affecting 27 Ncell towers in Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Dhading. So far, the company has restored 24 of the 27 affected sites. Of the remaining three, one tower in Ghattikhola, Timure, Rasuwa, has been completely destroyed. Technical teams have been deployed in the field and are carrying out the necessary work to restore the tower in Trishuli, Bidur, Nuwakot, and another tower in Tiru, Rasuwa.

In addition, to ensure connectivity for customers, Ncell has reactivated services for more than 25,000 customers whose SIMs had been restricted to one-way service or had both outgoing and incoming services suspended due to failure to top up their balance. This has facilitated communications for many customers during the emergency. These customers have also received the free services provided by Ncell, enabling them to stay in contact with their families and relatives and seek necessary assistance for rescue and relief efforts during this difficult time.

Ncell and NTA collaborate for awareness after Bhotekoshi floods

In coordination with the Government of Nepal and the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), Ncell has also been disseminating public awareness call tones and SMS messages. The messages include appeals to verify whether bank accounts, QR codes and links are official before sending donations to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. They also request people not to post disturbing or distressing photos, videos and other such content on social media and online platforms, and to remove such content immediately if it has already been posted.
