Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has shared that the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli floods have caused the damages on telecom infrastructure worth Rs 45 crore. Most of the damage was incurred by cellular towers. To compensate and ensure connectivity, satellite-based alternatives have been established, NTA has said in a press release.
As of now, most of the towers have come into operation. NTA says that Nepal Telecom (NTC)’s 116 out of 120 towers have come into operation. At the same time, Ncell has brought back 76 out of 78 towers into operation.
The authority has stated that arrangements have been made to operate essential telecommunication services by providing mobile coverage in most places from the restored towers. Generators have been placed to operate mobile towers in places where power transmission lines have been disrupted. The authority is coordinating with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), District Administration Office and security agencies, to fast-track the process to ensure connectivity in the affected regions.

30 Satellite Phones, 29 Satellite Internet Terminals After Bhotekoshi Floods
NTA says that 30 satellite phones have been brought into operation for emergency communication in areas where telecom services have been affected due to the floods. The authority has stated that 20 satellite phones received from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 10 from Ncell have been handed over to the NDRRMA.
Similarly, arrangements have been made to use 29 Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite internet terminals, including 25 from Ncell and 4 imported through DishHome, through the District Administration Offices of Rasuwa and Nuwakot.

The Authority is working on collecting details of the damage to telecom infrastructure in the floods. According to initial information, the Authority has said that there has been damage worth about Rs 45 crore to telecommunication infrastructure.
After the flood, NTA has also disseminated disaster-related information and search and rescue messages through SMS and CRBT through mobile service providers.
The Authority has urged mobile users not to post sensitive photos and videos of people who lost their lives or were injured in floods and landslides on social media and websites. It says that such content can affect the mental health of the victim’s family and the general public.
The authority says that it has decided to contribute Rs 15 crore to the Prime Minister’s Natural Disaster Relief Fund for disaster management caused by floods.
