Ncell Axiata CEO Andy Chong says the operator is ready for its 5G trial. Mr. Chong said the company is ready to embark on its next-generation cellular standard but only waiting for the frequency spectrum at the moment. He shared in an interaction with ICT journalists in Kathmandu recently.
Mr. Chong said, “5G has become more accessible these days. We are ready to start the trial after getting testing frequencies.”
He reaffirmed that the telco is well equipped with technology for starting the fifth-generation network.
Earlier, Ncell wrote a letter to Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) for the approval of its 5G procedure. The regulator though didn’t provide an encouraging response. Ncell has remained adamant that it is waiting for a green signal for frequencies from the government.
At the moment, only Nepal Telecom (NTC), the government-backed operator is permitted to proceed with its 5G. The company has not been able to kick-start its trial though. Ncell has expressed a desire for faster proceedings as it wants to accelerate its own 5G process. The private telco has also openly conveyed its displeasure at not receiving approval for the high-speed broadband network long after Ntc was approved.
Ntc could soon start its 5G trial from a select few cities in the coming weeks. It has received 2600 MHz frequency (mid-band) for its trial.
Successor to the current generation 4G, 5G is expected to revolutionize mobile broadband with wide-ranging applications beyond smartphones and computers.

The decision for Ncell 5G trial still pending
Ncell wants the government to provide it with the ascent and frequencies to start 5G trials. Its application submitted at NTA for the 5G test is still pending.

Despite not being able to begin its 5G trial, Ncell has remained a key operator with its 4G broadband. The company has over 67 lakhs subscribers on its fourth-generation network. Ncell users can also activate VoLTE service to enjoy HD voice service now.
