Nepal Telecom (NTC) is going to provide 150,000 eSIM to Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to be used in the smart meters. For this purpose, the two institutions reached an agreement on the 7th Baisakh 2080.

Ntc’s Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) Sangita Pahadi and Achyut Babu Ghimire, Director of Distribution and Customer Service Directorate on behalf of Nepal Electricity Authority signed the agreement papers.

On this occasion, Mrs. Pahadi expressed her sincere gratitude for the commercial cooperation with NEA. She then expressed her hope that the cooperation will continue in the near future.

Likewise, Achyut Babu Ghimire, Director of NEA also shared similar excitement. He expressed his happiness that since Ntc SIM is already in use in smart meters, the service will be available through e-SIM, a new technology in the future.

NEA will use NTC eSIM for smart meters for remote operation

NEA is using smart meters for getting information related to electricity usage. With its connectivity to the server, it will be easy to gain access to information about electricity consumption from the office. It will also be helpful to cut lines and control electricity leakage. eSIM helps to provide a communication facility between the NEA’s system and the electricity meters, which was provided with traditional SIM cards before.

Ntc eSIM will be available for customers with three-phase lines with a capacity of up to 100 amps. The operator has already provided 53,000 SIMs to NEA for smart meter purposes. It’s also the highest use case for the telco’s SIM card in the IoT service.

eSIM has one of the most significant uses in the Internet of Things (IoT) which is now getting started in Nepal. Till now, traditional SIM cards were being used for Smart electricity meters. And now Ntc eSIM will be used in the NEA’s meter. However, the use of eSIM in smart meters marks the beginning of eSIM in IoT which will unlock various use cases in the future.

Let’s hope that various types of IoT connectivity integrate the use of eSIM. Phones and Wearables have already used the next-gen SIM technology in Nepal.
