EU Warns Apple against Limiting USB-C Functionalities for iPhones

USB Type C port in smartphone

The European Union (EU) has warned Apple against the “possibility” of it limiting the functionalities of USB-C cables for its upcoming iPhones. Rumors circulated that Apple was planning to restrict charging speeds and other features on USB-C cables not certified under the “Made for iPhone” (MFi) program for its iPhone 15 devices.

The EU has legislated mandatory use of USB-C for smartphones including iPhones in the region. Apple is expected to ditch its lightning port and make the switch starting with the upcoming iPhone 15 series.

Earlier, reports emerged that Apple could impose a chip in the iPhone 15 devices to authenticate the cable in use. The chip would ensure that only the MFi-certified chargers will have the fast-charging ability.

EU wants consumer freedom in the third-party accessory market

While Apple wants its customers to stick with its own products in its ecosystem, the EU wants to liberate them. The body wants to give consumers freedom in the third-party accessory market to use any USB-C cables they choose.

Apple has to switch to USB-C ports to sell iPhones in the EU which could start with the iPhone 15 series

European Commissioner Thierry Breton has sent a letter warning that the move would be counterproductive. That letter mentions that if that happens Apple won’t be allowed to sell iPhones in the region. The EU could release a guide to ensure a “uniform interpretation” by QR 2023.

While the EU has issued a warning to Apple for the possibility of limiting USB-C functionalities on future iPhones, it only remains a rumor. There’s no confirmation that the US phone maker would implement a restriction on USB-C cable usage. However, the cables remain a huge part of the smartphone industry and legislators seek to ensure consumer rights are protected.

Probably, having the freedom to use any USB-C cable will make it more convenient for iPhone users. It will be liberating to those who may have found it difficult to use Apple’s proprietary Lightning cables.

Which one would you prefer, the restriction-free USB-C cable or the lightning cable on iPhones? Do share in the comments below.
