These AI features are coming to older Samsung Galaxy phones

Samsung AI

With Galaxy smartphones, Samsung is elevating user experience by incorporating powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) features. The world’s largest phone maker has brought the internet to the fingertips of users, camera in the pockets, and now, it’s integrative on-device AI to improve users’ daily lives. First, the AI revolution started with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. Now, the smartphone OEM is bringing this to previous-generation Galaxy devices.

Samsung has made the internet easily accessible with its Galaxy smartphones and smartly turned cameras into innovative communication tools that have become indispensable parts of our lives. However, despite massive discussions and works, the greatest benefits of AI haven’t yet reached mobile technology. Samsung though is changing it.

Samsung Galaxy gets the power of AI like no other, here’s why

It has proved difficult for smartphone manufacturers to bring true Artificial Intelligence potential to smartphones but as per Samsung, it’s different at the company. That’s because Galaxy puts the “power of openness” right into the palm of users’ hands.

The Galaxy AI is a universal intelligence on Galaxy smartphones as seen never before. It’s designed to empower everyone, everywhere. With these next-generation AI features, Samsung is delivering new possibilities which include but are not limited to barrier-free communication, simplified productivity to limitless creativity.

These Galaxy AI features coming to older Samsung smartphones

It has been speculated that Samsung will roll out some useful AI features across other phones. These include Circle to Search, Live Translate, Note Assist, and Photo Assist. It sounds sensible too as Samsung has embedded those features as part of its OneUI OS experience.

“Circle-to-Search” at work: A Galaxy AI feature

If you were less aware, Circle to Search is already there on Pixel phones. Live Translate, likewise, is available in the Samsung Dialer app (calling app) while Note Assist is incorporated into the Samsung Notes app. Lastly, the Photo Assist feature is integrated into Samsung’s Gallery app. So, it seems only reasonable now that Samsung will issue AI capabilities to Galaxy phones with the OneUI 6.1 update.

Here’s the list of Galaxy AI features coming to more Samsung devices

  • Live Translate: This iconic feature is your personal translator. During a call, the feature can translate the language to a language you want. If you struggle to understand the language of the caller on the other side, this AI future is your handy companion. Currently, it supports 13 languages (17 regions), Samsung says.
  • Circle-to-Search: Circle-to-Search lets you search by images without switching to another app. All you have to do is circle a portion of an image that you would like to know more of, the AI will then gather the important information on it for you. The device is available to a few premium handsets for now.
  • Note Assist: Note Assist helps you get a summary of your note, and also check the spelling and grammar of the text you have typed. Besides, the AI feature lets you translate the text into another language.
  • Photo Assist: This generative AI lets you enhance your photos within a few clicks. You can move an object, adjust its size, and angle, and more to get a much “better” picture. Additionally, you get edit suggestions to understand what AI features would make it better such as blur, background color change, colorize, etc. Then you can see the “before and after” of the image.

Which non-Galaxy S24 devices will get the AI features?

At its Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung did mention that the Galaxy AI would come to previous Galaxy devices. It mentioned Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and Galaxy Tab S9 without offering more specifics. Unfortunately, it almost confirms that the exclusive AI features are indeed coming from a very thin list of Samsung devices and this has been confirmed too. Speaking to TechRadar, Samsung’s Head of Customer Experience, Patrick Chomet revealed that no devices released in 2022 will get the AI services.

This may disqualify popular flagships such as the Galaxy S22 series. It may also disqualify the Galaxy S23 Series but let’s not get way ahead as the hardware should easily support the AI and this might also be a “testing” from the company to devise the future roadmap.

It’s also to be noted that these Samsung Galaxy AI features are free till the end of 2025. But for now, it would be nice if Samsung cared to publish the list of phones getting the AI features.
