As if the industry-defining ChatGPT was not enough, OpenAI is set to rival Google once again. This time, the AI giant is in rumors to launch its own search engine (ChatGPT search engine?) that could further hurt Google’s overreaching dominance in the internet space, Reuters reports.
And what’s more, the timing of the product launch could be yet another indication of where OpenAI’s target lies. Reuters reports that “two sources familiar with the matter” shared that OpenAI could launch its Google-rivaling search service just a day before Google’s annual I/O conference which will see the launch of the American search giant’s new AI models. Google has already brought Gemini after the emergence of ChatGPT. But as it seems, there could be more in the competition down the road.
The new report aligns with prior rumors that OpenAI is developing an AI-based product that can “search the internet.” Earlier, Bloomberg said that OpenAI’s search product will be integrated into the ChatGPT chatbot. Likewise, The Information adds that it could be “partly powered by Bing.”

Do note that this year’s Google I/O takes place on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. So, we can expect an OpenAI firework just before this very day.

OpenAI search engine could be yet another threat to Google’s internet empire
Google is still the world’s largest search engine or sort of an empire that it has built. Its wide array of services is already popular and are default option for smartphone and computer users. However, the search engine remains one of the key drivers for the company. But OpenAI might be capable of disrupting the market with its search service if we go by the precedent the company set with the sensationally viral ChatGPT.
ChatGPT, a chatbot service built on a Large Language Model (LLM) has been a sensation since its launch in November 2023. Its ability to generate accurate results, produce comprehensive passages, and ability to “learn from its mistakes”, understand the conversation, and engage in human-like dialogue has made it a part of life for many.

Google understands the threat
Since then, other tech giants including Google have also launched their versions of AI-backed chatbots. Google for its part though has felt quite a brunt leading it to make more investments in AI in recent times.
“It’s not like life is going to be hunky-dory, forever. If there’s a clear and present market reality, we need to twitch faster, like the athletes twitch faster,” Google search boss Prabhakar Raghavan warned employees as reported by CNBC. But he was also upbeat about Google’s distinct usability. He said, “They (people) still come to Google to verify what they see there because it is the trusted source and it becomes more critical in this era of generative AI.”
Adding current challenges to Google is the antitrust case which could result in severe ramifications for the internet giant. If OpenAI’s search service does come ashore before Google’s flagship event, then it would be to send a clear message. ChatGPT has been a transformative experience for many, and we can assume that it has the resources and the minds to replicate that again with a search engine. Only time will tell if these all materialize though.
Google is one of our favorite internet places and ChatGPT’s chatbot site has also climbed charts on our favorite sites list. This race could be more intensifying now.
