Smart Cell (the brand name of Smart Telecom) is already available with 4G in Kathmandu. Please read here for more update.

Till now, there are only two mobile operators running in the whole of the country, namely the Government owned Pioneering Telco: Nepal Telecom and the private giant owned by Malaysian Axiata: Ncell. Nepal Telecom stands first with 48 percent of the market share whereas Ncell stands second with 45 percent, both crossing 1.3 Million customers distributed throughout the country. NT runs PSTN landline, CDMA, GSM /UMTS and other WLL phones whereas all of the Ncell subscribers are from GSM/ UMTS mobile network (2G/ 3G mobile network).

With the unified license to run mobile network in any part of the country, Smart telecom will be the third one to operate mobile network in the capital city, Kathmandu. Around one month ago, it was on the news that Smart telecom is expanding their mobile network. Now, it is known that 50 towers have already installed in Kathmandu and they are currently testing those towers. Smart tells that its customers in 24 districts outside Kathmandu can use the mobile network. They are also in the process to expand their customer base in the capital, with the customer centers around the city.

All those towers in Smart telecom, are having 2G GSM technology while they are in continuous talk with the regulator to get 3G license and spectrum. Along side Kathmandu, they are also expanding their mobile network in Pokhara, Nepalgunj, Birgunj and Chitwan.

The company believes that the current expansion will enhance the telecom development in the country along with the increase of employment opportunities.

Smart Telecom has branded its mobile network as smart cell which is available in 24 districts of the whole country. It has got voice call, SMS, GPRS data, CRBT and MCA (miss call alert) services. You can check the balance of your SIM card by dialling *123#.  You can even get the talk time of Rs 5,200 for only Rs 99.
