Facebook Reels

Nepali singers will now get a royalty from Facebook and Insta reels. Music Royalty Collection Society Nepal (MRCSN) has reached an agreement with Meta that ensures singers get a cut from their music running in short videos which is a trendy feature on both social media platforms.

MRCSN on March 17th signed an agreement for Music Licensing and Publishing with Facebook and Instagram’s parent company Meta.  With this agreement, songs by Nepali artists will be entitled to earn a share to its singers for Reels. The short entertaining teaser videos have become massively popular on social media. And Meta has recently launched it globally.

For now, Nepali singes have only received the beta version of the short video feature into their account. But with the formal deal between Nepali body and Meta, Reels should arrive in full version for Nepali users too.

Nepali Songs to Get Royalty for Reels

Mangesh Dutta, MRCSN CTO says the deal with Meta means the songs that feature in Reels will draw royalty for Nepali singers. But there is one minor condition.

For songs to be eligible for royalty payments, the singers must register at MRCSN.

Dutta said, “Even these days, Nepali songs feature on international platforms. However, the original artists behind them haven’t earned their legitimate share for their creations. To address this, we have reached an agreement with Meta to ensure Nepali singers earn royalty from Reels.”

And that is not all. the Royalty Collection Society is also preparing for more deals. Dutta revealed that the body will soon make a deal with Spotify and other music platforms to bring them within royalty’s reach. “For this, the songs must have their registration at the platforms.”

Our Verdict

The idea of singers receiving (or not) royalty for their songs has buzzed for years. Whether for songs featuring on radios, or other electronic platforms, singers have long demanded a cut from their songs featuring on different platforms. But with social media, the geographical boundaries have blurred further for music. Nepali songs are not only played in Nepal, they are also very popular in South Asia, and beyond.

And they get a good sum of views and plays on international platforms. To get a short glimpse, go over to any popular Nepali song, you will see many from abroad commentating.

Even on Facebook and Instagram, Nepali songs feature massively but they have evaded any payment provided for the artists. But with the deal in place with Meta which owns the world’s largest social media, Nepali singers will be able to get a royalty from Facebook and Instagram Reels.
