Meta Nepal Election Integrity Summit

Meta says it is monitoring the comments in the Nepali language on its social media site Facebook. The statement comes after the Election Commission started the discussion with the US company at Nepal Election Integrity Summit ahead of the upcoming generation election.

Nepali is going to vote on Mangsir 4 and as usual, Election Commission wants to curb fake false, and malicious news spreading via the popular social media platform. The officials from the commission discussed the issue with the representatives from Meta.

The Commissioner of the Election Commission Dinesh Thapaliya welcomed the representatives of Meta. At the interactive session, he requested the company to scrutinize and help control misleading information from circulating on Facebook.

Ayesha Hashem, Public Policy Manager for South Asia at Meta, said a special channel will be created jointly with the Election Commission. She also shared that there are expert content monitors who are actively monitoring the comments in the Nepali language. It was also revealed that Meta is keeping an eye on hate speech in the same language.

Hashem likewise requested to report hate speeches if found.

“Nepal including some other countries does not report hate speech. We request you to report hate speech, false misleading information, and biased expressions,” she said.

Election Commission employees will soon receive training on the matter.

Fake news and hate speech are tools that can negatively influence election results. The practice is globally practiced but in recent years has been greatly regulated. Meta has expressed its commitment to doing its best to curb biased content.
