Kathmandu Metropolitan City calls for cable management within 15 days, warns to remove them from 16th day

Entangled cables wires in Ktm

Kathmandu Metropolitan City has requested internet, telecom, and electricity service providers to remove messy cables from the poles in its jurisdiction. The local government has given a 15-day for companies to remove the dangling cluttered cables off the poles.

After 15 days, if not complied, the city government warned that it will undertake the task to remove the cables itself. It has also asked service providers to tag the cables to help identify unnecessary wires more easily.

The cable management saga seems never-ending with the KMC starting the initiative now. As usual, ISPs would be one of the service providers to have the highest impact on its daily operations. The companies have already had long conflicts with NEA over running its cables through the poles. Now, the local government has also weighed in with its notice for the removal of the cables from the utility poles.

In Nepal, ISPs and TV service providers use utility poles to connect their services with their customers. But wires hanging on the poles in bulk for years have not triggered the talk of them turning the city ugly and thus the need to have them removed.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City to remove internet cables!

By releasing a notice, the Metropolitan city said that indiscriminately laid cables on the poles have distorted the beauty of the city. Likewise, such sables have upped the risk of fire and impacted movement for the transport system. This is why, the city has asked the companies or organizations in concern to remove the cables within 15 days.

“Kathmandu Metropolitan Municipality has held meetings with relevant agencies and officials at different times and requested cable management to avoid undesirable outcomes due to this. It has also sent letters repeatedly to implement the decisions in the discussions and meetings,” the notice reads.

“If the wire is don’t go off within 15 days from the date of publication of this notice, the Metropolitan office will remove them starting from the 16th day,” the notice warns.

The notice also mentions that the service providers will be responsible for the inconvenience it could cause to the customers.

The metropolitan has sought coordination from regulatory bodies for the task.
