Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has informed people to inform their banks when they change their SIM (phone) and email ID. The request is made to ensure that people’s personal and financial details remain safe from unauthorized hands.

Releasing a notice, the regulatory bank has urged people to inform their banks, digital wallet companies, and any service provider when they change their phone number or email ID.

The notice reflects the growing concern with the possible misuse of people’s personal details for financial fraud. SIM cards remain heavily important for security matters relating to financial transactions. Personal phone numbers are used for bank, digital wallet, and other accounts. If these numbers fall into unauthorized hands, scammers can use them to swindle money out of the original accounts.

In this regard, you should know and learn about SIM Swapping. Additionally, you can check out the recent ConnectIPS scam issue to learn more about financial concerns.

NRB reminds users to inform banks when they change their phone numbers

NRB especially reminds that when users change their phone number, buy a new SIM card, or when their phone is stolen with a SIM card inside, they should inform the banks, digital wallets, and any service provider they have subscribed to immediately. If informed promptly, concerned organizations can intervene and keep people’s accounts safe from any harm.

At the same time, NRB has also requested people to use the phone number registered in their own name and only use official apps for services.

The bank has requested users to contact the bank’s Financial Customer Protection Unit at 01-5719605 for curiosities and assistance.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
