The communication minister, Dr. Bikram Timilsina, says that the ministry is installing 1500 new cell towers and other infrastructure. The move is likely to expand telecommunication services across the country, with a new project named 1600 sites, which is the number of total cell towers to purchase.
The minister was addressing questions raised by other MPs in the House of Representatives on June 17, 2026. He said that the complaints regarding poor service quality are common in rural areas, and the ministry is taking the matter seriously and making efforts.
Minister for Information and Communications Dr. Bikram Timilsina has said that the process of constructing an additional 1,500 new mobile towers and relating infrastructure (sites) has been taken forward to expand the quality and accessibility of telecommunication services across the country.
He said that Nepal Telecom alone is preparing to invest more than Rs. 6 billion in FY 2083/84 to expand services and improve quality in rural areas. According to the minister, there are currently 4,829 sites operating across the country. Of these, 760 are in Koshi Province, 568 in Madhesh, 1,277 in Bagmati, 599 in Gandaki, 819 in Lumbini, 305 in Karnali, and 501 in Sudurpaschim Province.
The government has identified the need for 1,443 new sites across the country. To break it down, it includes 257 in Koshi, 228 in Madhesh, 389 in Bagmati, 76 in Gandaki, 200 in Lumbini, 121 in Karnali, and 172 in Sudurpaschim Province.

The minister said that after the additional sites come into operation, telecom service will witness a remarkable improvement across the country. He shared that both Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) and Nepal Telecom have assessed that the new sites will bring improvement in voice, broadband, and other digital services.
He said that a process has started to procure necessary equipment for about 1600 sites, which is for the swapping of existing sites and add new sites in a particular area. However, the total number of new sites in the whole of country will be 1500. But since the authorities will need to buy them from abroad, the process will take a while.
The government will coordinate with Nepal Telecom to add these additional sites to improve telecom service quality in rural areas of Nepal.
