Department of Passports has completed Nepal’s largest-ever data migration, bringing a new system for the production and management of passports. The new passport distribution system began on Ashar 29, and as per the department, some of the early people have already received the document.

The department has stated that the service has been started by printing passports at the department’s office in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu. “If you need to get a new passport or renew your expired passport, you are requested to take passport services from the district administration office or passport department in your permanent residence or from Nepali agencies abroad,” the department said in a statement issued on Monday (Asar 29).

Historic record in passport data migration

According to the passport department, old passport details of about 10 million (1 crore) Nepali citizens have been securely transferred to the new system. It’s claimed that this is the largest-scale data migration in Nepal’s digital history.

The department has made it clear that since the new system has just gone live, technical challenges may emerge in the initial phase of the implementation. Stating that it is natural that there may be some slowdown in the system in the initial days, the department has urged the public to be patient.

The department’s technical team and experts from the company developing the system are on ‘stand-by’ 24 hours a day, monitoring and improving for the speedy and long-term resolution of such potential problems, the notice states.

The department has also made a special appeal to people to help make the new system more stable and effective. It has urged only those in dire need to apply at this initial stage for it to work smoothly.

The department says that the new passport management system will stabilize in three months.

You can apply for your passport at https://nepalpassport.gov.np and get it in between 10 and 30 days of application at the district or area administration office. Or, you can also apply to get the passport ‘express way’ if you are in urgent need. For this, you need to apply at the Passport Department in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu, and pay between Rs 7000 and Rs 10,000, depending on the number of pages, as per the department’s website.
