Nepal Telecom (NTC) employees have contributed over 20 million (Rs 2,02,26,066) to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund for the relief, rescue, and rehabilitation of citizens affected by the Bhote Koshi flood in Rasuwa.

Today, (On Bhadra 22, 2083), the company’s Managing Director, Mrs. Sangita Pahadi, handed over the amount to the Honorable Finance Minister, Dr. Swarnim Wagle.

The company said that the support was collected by deducting contributions from the salaries of employees working at various levels of the company, based on their respective positions. The collected amount was deposited into the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund.

The fund handover ceremony was attended by Nepal Telecom Board Member and Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, Tanka Prasad Pandey; Board Member Lok Bahadur Katuwal, representing the employees; Chief Financial Officer Dwarika Prasad Paudel; and Chief Human Resources Officer Nirjhar Bhattarai.

The company says that it will also provide additional institutional assistance within a few days.

As a national telco, NT provided free voice, data, and SMS services for people in the Bhotekoshi flood-affected regions. At the same time, it worked diligently to restore all 120 sites to operation within a few days after the flood on Bhadra 10, 2083.

As intended, the funds will be utilized in the ongoing rescue, relief, and rehabilitation work for the disaster victims.

NT is Nepal’s state-backed telecom company and commits itself to contributing to various social causes when necessary. The company has over 1.46 crore 4G users and over 3.76 lakh NT Fiber users.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
