Summary✨

  • Dish Home provides free satellite internet service in flood-affected Rasuwa to assist rescue and relief efforts.
  • The service, in partnership with Eutelsat OneWeb, enables critical communication amid damaged traditional infrastructure.
  • This satellite connectivity supports emergency operations, coordination, and information exchange in affected areas.
  • Dish Home activated the satellite service with coordination from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA).
  • The initiative addresses immediate connectivity needs where conventional services are unavailable due to the floods.

Dish Home has started providing free satellite internet service in flood-affected areas of Rasuwa, where traditional telecom and internet infrastructure has been damaged by the devastating Bhotekoshi flood. The service helps with the ongoing rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts in the region.

The company has launched the service in cooperation with Eutelsat OneWeb to help maintain connectivity in affected and other critical areas.

The free connectivity supports emergency communication and coordination at a time when conventional telecommunications infrastructure has been disrupted.

Dish Home’s Free satellite internet for emergency communication for the after-flood rescue efforts

According to Dish Home, the satellite internet service is being provided free of charge in affected and other necessary areas. The connectivity is expected to support several critical activities, including:

• Communication during emergency rescue and relief operations
• Coordination between government and security agencies
• Information exchange between local authorities and stakeholders
• Essential digital communication in affected areas

The connectivity mobilizes Eutelsat OneWeb’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology as an alternative connectivity solution where local telecom and internet infrastructure has suffered damage. Private telco Ncell is providing satellite service in the flood-hit areas too.

LEO satellite networks provide internet connectivity without relying on the same terrestrial infrastructure used by conventional fixed and mobile networks. This is why this satellite connectivity is useful during disasters when fiber links, mobile towers, power systems, or other network infrastructure are disrupted.

Service provided with NTA coordination

Dish Home says that it has brought the satellite communication into operation, with coordination with the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) and relevant government agencies.

The company stated that it started providing the service from Bhadra 20, 2083, based on the priority requirements identified through coordination with the authorities.

The move comes as telecommunications operators continue efforts to restore communication infrastructure damaged by floods and landslides in Rasuwa and surrounding areas.

Dish Home also provides free internet in the Rasuwa flood-affected areas. But satellite connectivity offers services even in areas where fiber and cellular services are not available at the moment.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
