Nepal Telecom (NTC) has requested mobile phone users to use their SIM cards registered in their name for official documents and public services. The company issued a notice stressing the need to use their own Ntc SIM for various government services such as the National ID card, Nagarik App, etc.

The company made the request for security reasons. In recent months, instances of scams and hacking have increased. Most of the time, they involve the unconsented access to the mobile number. Have you heard of SIM Swapping?

Using SIM cards used in another name could complicate the situation. For e.g., if you feel that someone is trying to access your mobile number, you may need to call your telco (NTC in this context) for a solution. If the SIM card is not in your number, the process takes time.

Ntc wants you to use SIM card registered in your own name for these services and more

Ntc has urged the public to use their own SIM cards for the following public services, and not limited to> :

  • For National ID cards
  • To open a new bank account or use banking services such as a mobile banking app
  • To apply for a driving license
  • For receiving OTP (One-Time Passcode/password) at government offices
  • While requiring a number for online forms, passports, citizenship, etc.

Specifically, the company pointed to the following for the necessity to use your own SIM card:

  • You may not be able to receive the above services
  • Risk to your personal data security
  • A problem may occur while receiving government services and documents

But for these and for many and mostly security and convenience reasons, it’s best advised that you use your own SIM card.

Ntc tells users to use own SIM for services

You can dial *922# to know who your current SIM card is registered to. You can visit the Ntc office to transfer the ownership of your Ntc SIM. It’s a very easy process and only takes a few minutes with the documents.
