Nepal Telecom, the sole landline operator in Nepal has performed the migration of old traditional phones to IP, for three exchanges. Earlier it was in Gwarko when the migration of the landline phones had started. The two more Ntc exchanges where the new IP telephones are available are: Kapan and Kirtipur.

On Ashar 23 ( July 7), Ntc successfully performed the migration for the Gwarko exchange, in presence of top level officials from Ntc and Ministry of Information and Communication (MOIC). It was the first exchange to start the migration of the landline telephone to IP based ones.

Ntc performed the  TDM migration in Kapan Exchange and Kirtipur Exchange on Shrawan 1 and 4 respectively. Now, 5823 telephone lines in Kapan and 6533 lines in Kirtipur Exchange are now available with IP technology. With the migration, the customers there will get improved voice, data and new services.

What are the additional services with Ntc TDM migration

After the implementation of Ntc TDM migration, Ntc mentions of the following.

  • The voice and data service of the upgraded landline phones will significantly improve.
  • Several new services like IPTV, Video on demand will add with the new upgraded phone.
  • The demand for ADSL ports for high speed internet can be fulfilled as per customers demand.

Ntc has planned to migrate 1 lakh and 34 thousand PSTN telephone lines to IP based equipment. The new fiscal year plan includes 4 lakhs of line for migration. So, all the remaining phones will gradually migrate within few years period. There are altogether 7 lakh PSTN lines/ subscribers in the country.

It has been 25 years that the first digital telephony started in Nepal. With the IP based telephony, Ntc can fulfill customers demand for high quality voice, data, video and more Value added service.

Though they can provide such additional services with the landline phone, it will take sometime to actually make it available to public. Till then, they will keep on migrating other landline phones to IP.
